The Old Testament (OT) is the first half (well, much more than half) of the Bible. It has a variety of types of books: historical narrative, poetry and the prophets. Each book of the OT was written to a specific audience at a specific time, but there are timeless truths within the collection of 39 books. It begins with the story of creation and lays the foundation for Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. The entire OT looks forward to Jesus and tells the back-story of redemptive history. We learn much about the character of God and His intentions for the world. I love the OT and often meditate on the truths therein. We can fall in love more deeply with God by understanding his character, his purposes and his sovereignty as described in the OT, and I hope that it speaks clearly and deeply to your heart as you seek God.
