“See, I have taught you statutes and judgments just as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do thus in the land where you are entering to possess it. So keep and do them, for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the Lord our God whenever we call on Him? Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today? Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your sons and your grandsons.
– Deuteronomy 6.5-9
As Christians, our wisdom is to live Godly lifestyles. Our understanding is to hear His commands and to keep them. And this will be a testimony to those around us; our neighbors, our friends, foreigners, anyone – that we live lives that are different, that we set ourselves apart and love Him and obey His commandments out of love.
Give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently.
Have you ever received such advice? How would one keep his soul diligently? What does it meed to give heed to one’s self? God has poured out His heart for us in His Word. If you want to know what God thinks about most anything, dig in to the Scriptures. And then “heed” yourself. Pay close attention and examine yourself. Does your life, do your habits match up with what God has said?
Knowing and loving God is the greatest pleasure of life. And of the greatest reward: eternity with Him. To not know Him and to not obey Him is to be searching for satisfaction in things that cannot fulfill and eternity in Hell.
So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
– Phil 2.12-13
Salvation is not a static, nor is it a one time event. It is a life-long transformation. Once we surrender ourselves to God and His will, it is He who is at work in us to cause us to will and to live out His good pleasure. And it is in obedience and surrender to His leadership that we work out our salvation diligently, and with fear of disobeying – for not wanting to break His heart.
And this is our wisdom in front of the world. When we obey, when we are satisfied, when we do not need the things of the world to make us complete and happy. Are you satisfied? Are you set apart? Are you wise before the world for following in the paths of Christ and exemplifying His love and insight?
